A Theatre-Based Professional Development Training

P.O.W.W.E.R. Training is a professional development program and DEI initiative that uses theatre, facilitated dialogue and action planning to raise awareness among educators/mental health practitioners about the severity and impact of trauma on Black students, especially in urban regions.

The training is centered around the one-person stage play (The Danger of Hope) that depicts the trauma-infused “everyday life” of Black high school students in low-income and under-resourced communities. The P.O.W.W.E.R. Training uses performance as a vehicle to:

Foster empathy for the experiences of Black youth,
Discuss ways that educators/ mental health practitioners engage with Black youth in educational settings, and
Provide a space for educators/ mental health practitioners to examine examples of “misconduct” in a low risk setting.

Phase 1: Awareness

Phase 1 introduces educators and mental health practitioners to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how to identify symptoms of trauma.

Phase 2: Affirmation

Phase 2 introduces educators and mental health practitioners to the concept of secondary trauma and the importance of self-care.

Phase 3: Performance in Teaching

Phase 3 introduces educators to their unique teaching style and the how "theatre" can be a useful tool in the classroom.

Phase 4: Creative Methods

Phase 4 introduces mental health practitioners to various creative methods and tools to use with students and clients.

Phase 5: Case Studies

Phase 5 introduces educators and mental health practitioners to individual student's stories and explores the power of storytelling.
